The questions worth answering up front.

Vaulant is a private vault for the things your loved ones would need if something happened to you: where the will and trust live, scanned documents and policies, bank account details, MFA codes, even letters. You add them once. We keep them safe. If you ever stop responding, the people you chose receive exactly what you set aside for them.

A will is a legal document. Vaulant is a practical handoff: where your accounts are, who to call, what each thing means. We don't replace a will. We recommend you have one, and that it references your Vaulant account so your executor knows it exists. Vaulant just makes sure your family doesn't spend six months piecing together passwords.

Password managers are made for daily use. Vaulant is made for the day someone else needs your stuff. The difference is the succession process: the careful, time-gated, multi-channel handoff. Use both: 1Password for daily life, Vaulant for what you'd want your spouse or kids to find.

Not while you're using it. Items are encrypted on your device before they're sent, and our servers only ever store sealed envelopes. The one exception is yours to control: for what you leave behind, you can let Vaulant hold the key so we can pass it on after the waiting period, or name a custodian so even that key stays outside our reach. Your everyday vault, we can never read.

With a one-time code sent to your email, or your Google account, Vaulant uses that only to recognize you, never to read your vault. (Sign in with Apple is coming later.) To unlock the vault itself you use a passphrase you set at signup, or a device passkey for one-touch unlock. Whoever you sign in with only ever handles encrypted material; they can't read it.

No, and we couldn't even if we wanted to. Your items are encrypted on your device, so we have nothing readable to sell or share. No analytics ever touch your vault contents. Subscriptions are how we make money.

You stop responding to the check-in for the window you set (say a month). Then your successors are notified and a waiting period begins: 14 days by default, and you can set it to 7, 14, or 30. Throughout it we keep trying every channel you've registered, asking if you're around. Only if you still don't respond does the handoff happen. If you share the vault, this only starts once every owner has gone quiet.

Check in before you leave; you can pause check-ins, or set them to quarterly. If a recovery process accidentally starts, one tap from any device cancels it. Your successors are designed to be allies in this: they're notified at every step and can also stop the process.

Only if you've already stopped responding for weeks, AND they wait through a 14-day grace period during which you can cancel with one tap. They can't read anything until then. If you have multiple successors in a Circle, you can require 2 of 3 to agree, and any one of them can stop a request that looks wrong.

We've made a written commitment: at least 90 days' notice, no price hikes during a wind-down, full export of your encrypted data, and the decryption tool released openly so you can recover offline forever. The full text is on our 'If we go away' page.

You set a passphrase when you sign up, it's required, and it unlocks your vault on any new device. It never leaves your device, so we can't reset it for you; that's the point. For extra durability you can also print a Safety Envelope (12 plain words on paper) as a backup to the passphrase. We especially recommend it if you live alone.

About five minutes. Sign in with your email or Google, set a passphrase, add a couple of items, name a successor, choose a check-in cadence. You're done.

During a check-in, we'll occasionally ask you to confirm your people and items are still current. If a successor is no longer reachable, you re-assign or remove them in a tap, and the vault keeps quietly waiting.

Where the will, trust, or deeds live; financial and insurance accounts; scanned documents (lease, titles, policies); letters to specific people; funeral wishes; contact details for your accountant or lawyer; and, yes, the everyday passwords and MFA codes your family would still need. You can even leave short audio or video messages. Vaulant isn't a media library (no large video for daily use) but short voice and video notes are welcome.
