What happens to your vault if Vaulant is gone.
People who hand us their most important things deserve to know what happens if we ever wind down or get acquired. This is not a marketing page: it's a written, binding commitment in our terms of service.
Three guarantees
- 90 days of notice. Before any service interruption, you have at least 90 days from the moment we announce. No "surprise sunset Friday."
- No price changes during wind-down. You keep paying what you paid before. No taking advantage of users who can't easily leave.
- Full encrypted-data export. Every byte of your encrypted vault and the decryption metadata you'd need is downloadable. With your passphrase (or, if you printed one, your Safety Envelope), you can decrypt it offline forever, using a tool we publish openly.
One honest caveat about succession
Your own access survives us no matter what. Succession is more nuanced. If you chose a custodian (your own offline backup, or someone you named), the key share we hold is mirrored into a separate, immutable export, so your custodian can still complete the handoff offline without us. If you chose the simplest option (letting Vaulant hold the key) that path depends on us being here to run it, and it would not survive our shutdown. That's the trade you make for the convenience, and it's why the custodian option exists.
